The Gothenburg International Film Festival is one of the biggest events on the northern-European film circuit. Featuring a juried international competition with a Nordic focus, seminars and social events, it is held at various cinemas and venues across the city.

It awards a number of prizes, including the Nordic Competition Award, a cinematography prize and a screenplay prize. The standard of both screenings and extramural events is very high and the festival is one of the main meeting points for the Scandinavian film industry.
