Hidden away underneath Islington library is Islington museum. Islington is one of the early boroughs of London, right at the north of the city and was one of the main routes in or out of the City.

It was only recently, that Islington has a museum for its lineage. Opened in June 2008 a modernly designed building, housing a lot of History, this museum is not just the history of the area in its topographical sense.

My friends and I took a trip to Islington museum, which looks at the history of the people who have inhabited it. From the immigrants of the 17th and 18th century, to the late 19th and early 20th century immigrants, this museum has stories from the Jamaican nurses who came over in the 50’s and letters from war heroes that became casualties of WW2.

We interviewed a very informative lady called Cheryl Smith. Cheryl works in the museum and has lived in the borough for fifteen years. She told us of the borough’s history within politics and the creative industries.
She explained that in 17th centuries there were dissenters against government and King who settled in the Islington area, due to the boundary decrees of the King.

People from all different backgrounds populate the district of Islington. Italian, Irish, Somali and Greek to name a few, my own father moved to Finsbury Park when he came from Hungary in the 1950’s.

There is a history of watchmakers in the area, which is really the beginning of the creative industries. In modern day Islington has vested interest in the creative industries, as it has 36 arts council funded projects.
