The word "Kwanzaa" is a Swahili word meaning "first fruits of the harvest". Every year, San Francisco's Bay Area Discovery Museum hosts this heart-warming celebration of the African-American community. The family-orientated event includes arts and crafts and live entertainment.

The new arts and crafts studio offers face-painting and there are performances (11am & 1.30pm) from drummers, hip-hop artists and dancers.

The guiding principles of Kwanzaa Nguzo Saba encompass traditional humanitarian values such as tribal unity, collective work and responsibility, creativity and faith. The celebrations aim to reflect these tenets in the activities on offer throughout the day.
