Villains could come up against Robocop in 2084IN 2084, it is obvious the world will be a far different place from the one we live in now. Exactly how, none of us will never know.
But now, a UK robotic expert has predicted that robotic cops, similar to those used in the science fiction films such as Robocop, will be patrolling the streets, cracking down on crime plaguing the city in 75 or so years time.
The 2084: Big Robot Is Watching You report was commissioned by Warner Home Video to celebrate the DVD release of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, out on 11 August 2008 - and was researched by Professor Noel Sharkey of the University of Sheffield.
Ofcourse, it is a far cry from the films of The Terminator and Minority Report, where clever clogs came up with an idea on how to predict when and where a crime was going to happen.
Professor Sharkey said: "Hollywood movies and TV shows such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles have been dismissed as fantastical over the years, but this report, based on existing research and current technological developments, suggests that robots will play a much bigger role in society over the next 75 years than previously anticipated."
These so called humanoid robots, will apparently free up space for officers, detect weaponery on potential criminals and hopefully cut crime.
Made from inorganic material, they will have human-like features and expressions and will be able to arrest humans with a substantial constraining force due to their super-strength and inability to feel pain.
They will also be able to detect weapons including guns, knives and explosives as well as recognising drunks and aggressive behaviour in large areas.
Prof Sharkey added: "These robot developments could be extremely beneficial in the protection of citizens and police in the hands of benevolent governments.
But he warned: "In the wrong hands, as warned in the movie, robot law enforcement could be a major blow to individual privacy and basic human rights."
A better class of criminal in 2084?Ofcourse, as the deceased Heath Ledger so cleverly put it in the new Batman film as the evil Joker character (pictured left), in the new release The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan: "This town deserves a better class of criminal."
And who knows, in 2084, there will be!
