Michelle, in the speech, talked a great deal about the 'political thread' of her husband's values, and the passion he has for creating change in America.

She talked about her time growing up with a father who contracted multiple sclerosis in his 30s, and that despite the pain her father was going through, he always had a smile on his face.

She said of her father: "Even when he couldn't button up his shirt, he still had a smile on his face. And that is what unites Americans."

Obama's wife added further: "A new tide of history creates a new tide of hope. That's why I love this country."

The Illinois senator is contesting the war veteran John McCain in the race to the White House.

There are just 146 days until President Bush leaves office, and a new president is sworn in.

Obama's wife also said that her husband Barack's core values remain strong.

They include:

Ending the war in Iraq responsibly.

To build an economy that lifts every family.

Ensure that US kids have a decent education -

Make sure everyone has a stake in the future of America.

She told the convention: "You see, Barack doesn't care where you are from. What you do, or what party you belong to. That's just not how he sees the world. He knows that thread that connects us is strong. It's working for a better world for our children. That thread is strong."

Obama's wife added: "Millions of Americans understand that Barack will fight for change."

She told them why she gave up a law career to go into public service because she believed in creating the great American dream.

She said: "Each of us have something to contribute to this nation. It's what Barack believes, and it's what I believe."

And she paid tribute to Obama's rival Hilary Clinton, who contested the Democratic nomination.

She ended: "Barack will fight for the change America needs."

It was a dramatic speech in the typical American rousing fashion, ending with the music Isn't She Lovely, by the legend Stevie Wonder. The gusto politics is sweeping America.

Obama's wife echoed hope, change, and that thread that connects every American, that is humanity and compassion.

Barack Obama jokily said on his FACEBOOK updates page: "I am so lucky to be married to the woman who delivered that speech last night.

Michelle was electrifying, inspiring, and absolutely magnificent. I get a lot of credit for the speech I gave at the 2004 convention -- but I think she may have me beat."
