THE LABOUR PARTY BLACK SECTION
Organised for African, Caribbean and Asian Political Representation

Four African-Caribbean and Asian Labour activists created history by being elected to parliament in 1987. Paul Boateng, Diane Abbott, Bernie Grant and Keith Vaz were all Labour Party Black Section (LPBS) members. The LPBS movement was founded 25 years ago to fight for greater Black representation. It blazed the trail for today’s Black politicians, some of whom are now in government.

But despite the achievements of the Black Sections, including the branches in south London, there are just 15 African-Caribbean and Asian Members of Parliament when there should be more than 50. The population of London - the capital famed for its multicultural society - is at least one third African, Caribbean and Asian. Despite this fact, the city has no Black council leaders and few Africans, Caribbeans or Asians at decision-making levels.

The Black Section championed gender as well as racial equality. Women were represented at all levels of its organisation.
2008 marks a quarter of a century since this pioneering self-organisation movement was created. As Black History is celebrated in Britain during October, this meeting is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge our achievements and plan the way forward. 020 7525 5000 only for directions to the venue
