Bleak news update:

Unemployment has reached its highest level since 1997 with 1.8 million unemployed.

And the prediction is 2 million could be out of work by Christmas.

Shadow employment secretary Chris Grayling said on BBCs Daily Politics: "The biggest challenge now is uemployment."

He added: "The nation's finances are in a monumental mess."

He said that the UK was already borrowing large amounts to stay afloat.

You're not kidding...?

The TUC are urging the government to increase unemployment benefits for those about to lose their jobs - due to the rise in living standards.

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'Putting more money into ordinary people's pockets must be part of the response to the recession. Tax cuts have a role, but there is an even stronger case for boosting unemployment benefit. It is the quickest way to stimulate the economy and protects the newly unemployed from a catastrophic fall in their income."

On a lighter note...

The face of Soccer Saturday Jeff Stelling is now the new face of Channel Four's afternoon quiz programme Countdown. So, if you are out of work, you can now settle down with a Cuppa and a Biccie and watch enthusiastic Jeff do the number crunching, taking over from entertainment comedian Des O'Connor.
