Royal Mail's Diabolical Service

contribs editor's picture

It’s a common tale told by many. Once upon a time I posted a letter and it was never seen again. The postal service provided by Royal Mail never fails to disappoint. I posted a letter first class and by recorded delivery 10 days ago and it still hasn’t been received by the addressee. Using the Royal Mails automated track and trace service I was promptly told by the ‘voice’ that my item could not be found on the system and that I was being transferred to a customer service adviser. En route I was erroneously put through to Lloyds TSB where I was asked for my account number and sortcode and then to the queue for British Gas customers. Eventually, Maria, the human adviser at Royal Mail, said that my letter would only be treated as a lost item 15 days after the original postng date. It would be futile of me to hope that my letter is recovered.

In 2004, 202 postal staff were convicted of theft and one man was sentenced in January of this year for masterminding a £20 million fraud involving credit cards and cheque books stolen from a north London sorting office. A summer of industrial action by postal workers looms as they fail to reach agreement with Royal Mail over demands covering pay, pensions, working practices and fears about privatisation. Does anyone still believe that  Royal Mail can deliver a decent level of service to its customers?
