A ‘clash’ of civilisations will be the main source of future world conflicts
Submitted by contribs editor on Wed, 22/11/2006 - 12:03am. DebateA special one-day conference organised by the Greater London Authority explores the highly contentious notion
Islam and the Westthat conflict between the West and the Islamic world is inevitable. Those who support this view believe that people’s cultural and religious identity will be the basis of future world conflicts. Policy-makers and scholars will discuss the impact that recent international events have had on London’s communities. They will examine the issues of religious tolerance, human rights, diversity and British multiculturalism.

Finnish racism exposed

As Nelson Mandela would say:"All that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing". Racism in its many guises can be insidious. The-Latest.com is a campaigning site and as such we intend to name and shame Finland for its refusal to deal decisively with its confectionary giant Cloetta Fazer who use demeaning and racially offensive images as packaging for their products (see The-Latest exclusive "First Win In Finnish Racism Fight" by Mika Valtonen). Finland will be taking over the presidency of the European Union from Austria on the 1st July 2006. It will be presiding over a community of countries representing diverse races and cultures. We intend to protest at the highest level and need your help. Write a letter of complaint to your Member of European Parliament (MEP) and the Finnish Ambassador, Jaakko Laajava, at the Finnish embassy in London at 38 Chesham Place, SW1X 8HW or email sanomat.lon@formin.fi. Let us know your views on this issue by either adding a comment to the article by Mika Valtonen or this forum.
What's so great about citizen journalism?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently writing my dissertation in the UK about the open source movement and citizen journalism. I'm very interested in the motivation people have to publish jounalism work which they are not paid for.

Britain's 'no-go' areas for non-Muslims
Submitted by contribs editor on Sun, 06/01/2008 - 8:38pm. DebateThe Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester and the Church's only Asian bishop, writing in The Sunday Telegraph, says that people of a different race or faith face physical attack if they live or work in communities dominated by a strict Muslim ideology.

Men behaving badly?
Submitted by contribs editor on Sat, 12/08/2006 - 1:20am. DebateRare is the man who seriously contemplates settling down before the age of 35. They are far too tied up with careers, clubbing, one-night stands and boys’ toys.

Childless women and the commitment-shy man
Submitted by contribs editor on Sat, 12/08/2006 - 12:37am. DebateA recent report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) states that when women in their early 20s were interviewed between 1982-84, only five per cent said they didn’t want children, yet four times as many were childless by their late 30s. Furthermore, it’s projected that almost one quarter of women born in 1973 will be childless by the age of 45. Sue Peart, Editor of glossy magazine You says: “I’ve lost count of the number of newspaper and magazine column miles I’ve read on the vexed question of those-how shall we describe them?- women who, for one reason or another, arrive at their late 30’s and early 40’s childless. The clichés used to describe them don’t make attractive reading. ‘Smug singletons’ and ‘selfish career women’ are two oft-trotted-out examples. Commentators seem to assume that women have made a deliberate choice to put career (or, to be more realistic, job) over family, and maybe some of them have. But equally many of them yearn for a baby, it’s just that the right man hasn’t come along in time.”

Horror images used to scare smokers
Submitted by contribs editor on Sun, 28/05/2006 - 9:22pm. DebateBeleaguered Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has launched the Governments latest offensive aimed at deterring people from smoking. A website has been set up inviting the public to choose a series of picture warnings which will cover 40% of the back of cigarette packets from autumn 2007. The move has been welcomed by Cancer Research UK. However, Simon Clark, director of smokers’ lobby group Forest said: “We are strongly opposed to graphic health warnings. Smokers are well aware of the health risks of smoking. The proposed images are gratuitously offensive and yet another example of smokers being singled out for special attention”. Are smokers being unfairly treated by powerful, rabid anti smoking campaigners? The-Latest would like to know your views about the images and this Department of Health initiative.
