The Day Thatcher Quit

EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO today, a piece of Conservative history was made.

Britain's first ever female Tory Prime minister Margaret Thatcher was hounded out by her own Party, and resigned as Party leader triggering a leadership election - eventually won by John Major.

I was only a wee lad at school but does remember the day when a special school assembly was held just for this shocking event in honour of Britain's longest serving PM.

The former PM had held office for 11 years, and could have gone on longer, had there not been a civil war within the Party. It was to be the first of many civil wars within the Party until in 2006, David Cameron had 'full' backing from the so called Party 'faithful.'

Only Tony Blair came close to beating Mrs Thatcher's reign as PM - but was forced to hand over to the Clunking Fist Chancellor, now unelected PM Gordon Brown.

The election of Lady Thatcher as the UKs first ever female Prime minister seems uncanny now that the United States has elected its first ever Black President Barack Obama.
