Time to look back...

England won Ashes. Congrats to them! Frankly speaking, I was kindof expecting this result, given their slow and gradually confident rise to dominance in various field of Cricket, the last few Ashes, the World Twenty 20, etc…and coming from India, a country with almost 200 years of direct colonial legacy, we are  supporters of England in Football. (The Goanese people however support Portugal, and Bengalies divided between Brazil and Argentina, with me an outcast among proud Calcuttans, for the incongruity of supporting Germany and England together, whoever perform better! I just love Football, at the end of the day I guess!)

However in Cricket there is no such dilemma, we support India, and when India is not there, or out of competition, England. So naturally the Twitter World was orgasmic with England winning the Ashes so emphatically. And being an Anglophile, I was quietly happy.

While watching the sentiments after the match, the proud three lion emblamed lads, the dances, those quips, proud smiles, singing anthems, so quintessentially English, I was wondering…is this the same England, which is drowned in self destructive problems?

The Islamic Fundamentalism on the meteoric rise in the University campuses, the threatening Fascist British Nationalist Party with no respect for opposition voice, the cowardly surrender to Libya over the Lockerbie Bomber, the regular shying away from taking initiative and lead in Global problems, the uneducated mass, the one after one, rapists, paedophiles, and serial killers, dysfunctional societies, the rising street violence and hooliganism in the name of protests, all from the country which gave us modern democracy, irreligious libertine ideas, spirit of adventure, Victorian chivalry, politeness, and tolerant attitude toward opposing ideas? (And just to clarify, am not an Islamophobe, or against any religion as such, just that I am against fundamentalism, and coercive tactics of any sort...)

Makes you feel like having a bitter lump stuck in your throat, hard to digest…

Something had horribly gone wrong. The time to reflect, and ponder, the time to go back and see ones face in the mirror, the  time to go back and look for the roots is near. Otherwise the motherland of modern democracy will slowly decay and rot away to oblivion like the last days of Pompei.

Which is sad…
