Parliamentary candidates for a new party that puts people before fat cat profits include a former Labour mayor and ex-MP - both of whom broke with the party because it has gone along with the British government's economic attacks on the very working people it is supposed to represent.
Nana Asante, who was the first citizen of the north west London borough of Harrow last year, and former Coventry MP Dave Nellist are among 133 people standing in the UK's general election this month for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC). TUSC was co-founded by the late trade union leader Bob Crow, a working class hero of the left.
Its chair Nellist represented Coventry South East in parliament between 1983 and 1992. He was expelled from the Labour Party in 1991 along with other Militant Tendency comrades of his for being too socialist for the right-wing leadership to bear. He is hoping to win again in a new seat that covers the constituency boundaries of his old one.
Asante broke from Harrow Labour group, with eight other fellow councillors, citing its "institutional racism" as their reason. Rather than investigate their grievances the party expelled them.
Fellow Black candidate Kingsley Abrams, an ex-Lambeth councillor in south London and former executive council member of Britain's largest union Unite, was barred from standing as a candidate by Labour for refusing to go along with its Conservative-inspired axing of town hall public services. He is contesting for TUSC the Bermondsey and Old Southwark south east London seat of former justice minister and leading Liberal Democrat, Simon Hughes.
Asante is a passionate community activist who has always gone the extra mile to support residents and has been a powerful legally-trained advocate for their rights. A politician of Ghanaian descent, she was born in Israel, went to primary school in Switzerland and secondary school and university in Ghana. She speaks Ga, English, French and studied Arabic.
Asante is standing as the TUSC candidate for Harrow East because she says "the party is committed to justice for all, not only the one per cent". She shares TUSC's ideal that "people should come before profit especially when it comes to essential services such as health, education, housing, transport and public utilities".
Asante believes there should be a living wage so that working people can survive on their pay packet without depending on income support from the government. The UK's Conservative-led government has slashed state benefits for the poor and disabled people and if it gets back into to power will cut back even more in the name of "austerity".
The party is committed to justice for all. TUSC is fighting for the continued public ownership of the British health service popularly known as the NHS. Under Labour and Conservative governments it has been increasingly privatised by stealth, which has angered the public.
Asante has worked in the voluntary and community sector for more than 25 years and lived in the her Harrow constituency for more than two decades.
She was a Harrow councillor from 2002 to 2014 and borough Mayor from 2013 to 2014. She chairs Harrow Fairtrade Campaign that is about trade justice for under-developed countries and, under her leadership, Harrow achieved Fairtrade Borough status in 2014.
Asante is involved in church community life and is a fellowship group leader and chaplain of First Stanmore Girls Brigade. As a person of faith, she understands its importance in the lives of people.
The mother of four children and a grandchild, she also understands the issues facing working families and believes there is an alternative to economic austerity and cuts in welfare benefits and public services - unlike the three main British political parties, including Labour, which has been challenged by its left-wing critics.
